Presenting the RDC Information System in Indonesia and Colombia

Sarajevo, October 14th 2008

Upon the invitation of the Indonesian Association of Families of the Disappeared (IKOHI – IKATAN KELUARGA ORANG HILANG INDONESIA), RDC President Mr. Mirsad Tokaca will participate in the workshop on Human Rights Documentation which will be held on 15-21 October 2008 in Jakarta, Indonesia.

As part of his visit to Indonesia , Mr. Tokaca will meet with members of the Committee for Peaceful Integration Aceh; the Committee for the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of Aceh; and representatives of the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations for Truth-Seeking, as well as representatives of victims' associations.

Cooperation with organizations in Indonesia intensified after the ‘Information Systems for Human Rights Organizations training seminar' which the RDC organized in cooperation with the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and which was held on 23-27 June 2008 in the RDC Library and Club in Sarajevo.

The five-day seminar was attended by representatives from organizations which deal with human rights violations in Indonesia, Colombia, Burundi, Guatemala and the United States.

In June 2007, the RDC released the results of its Human Losses in Bosnia and Herzegovina 1991-1995 project, and presented its Information System – a unique database of facts about people who were killed or disappeared during the war.

Given the interest shown by research organizations, universities and civil society organizations from all over the world, and their recognition of the significance of the project, the RDC had decided to share the knowledge and experience its staff have gained through documenting and researching human rights violations. The RDC Information System was presented as a universal tool for facing the past in post-conflict societies.

Seminar participants considered the seminar exceptionally valuable and expressed a wish to continue cooperation.

That cooperation has been continued by Mr. Tokaca during a visit to Bogota, Colombia on 13-18 September to take part in the international seminar ‘Historical memory of armed conflict'. The seminar was organized by the University of Colombia's Institute for Political Studies and International Relations, in cooperation with the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) and the Commission for Historical Memory at the National Commission for Reparations.

From 15-21 October 2008, Mr. Tokaca will participate in the ‘Documenting Human Rights' seminar in Jakarta, Indonesia.
